MSc. Huynh Minh Hoang, a member of the research team, said that compared to traditional freshwater ice making systems, the advantage of seawater ice making technology has created product of liquid ice. Liquid ice is a mixture of millions of ice crystals with diameter from 0.1 to 1 mm, maintained in the temperature range from -6 Celsius degree to -2 Celsius degree. This is a transition state between the liquid phase and solid phase that could be able to be pumped directly.

Moreover, the time to produce the product of ice liquid is also very short. After only two hours of starting the system, the output will be for three batches of 15 liters of liquid ice. Despite rapid cooling, the melting of liquid ice is much slower than freshwater ice.

With these advantages, the use of liquid ice in the fisheries industry will extend the time to preserve fish and maintain fish in low temperature during processing to ensure high quality final products.

This research approached and built a model of liquid ice maker from seawater with small-scale. Initially, this model will be applied in the training for students of refrigeration and air conditioning at school. Since then, the authors will obtain more experience and master liquid ice production technology in Vietnam.

With this new technology, if applied in off-shore fishing, ship owners instead of buying freshwater ice from the mainland, then grinding it or leaving it in the cold storage on the ship, they only install this new equipment system on the ship. The input is the pumped seawater and the output will be liquid ice used to preserve fish.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hoang An Quoc – Chairman of Science and Technology Council of Ministry of Industry and Trade highly appreciated the ideas of the authors, and hoped that the authors could continue to research and develop this new technology further in Vietnam, then research, design and manufacture equipment with greater capacity and put into practical application.
